The Lying Lawyer

Ghostwriting Agency

You're busy living your story. I'm lying down writing it.

A lawyer in a dark suit and bright red tie, lying back

You have a story. We turn it into a real book. Your ideas, your memories, your voice, shaped into pages by a team led by a lawyer who has published books of his own.

What we write

  • Fiction

Novels and short stories: horror, thrillers, mysteries, and romance, for self-publishing.

  • Fantasy and sci-fi

Fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, for self-publishing.

  • Family and life stories

Memoirs, life stories, family histories, and books about a parent or grandparent. Made for the people you love.

  • Other nonfiction

History, true crime, how-to guides, travel, and faith.

  • Self-help and inspiration

Lessons you've learned, turned into a book that helps other people.

  • Business and professional

Business, leadership, and expert guides with your name on the cover. A book that shows people you know your stuff.

  • Picture and specialty books

Children's books, coloring books, and poetry.

  • Other writing

Articles, blogs, newsletters, business writing, website copy, and content for law firms — ask us.

Don't see your kind of book?

Tell us your idea and your budget. We'll tell you honestly whether we can do it, and what it would cost. No pressure, and no silly questions.

How it works

  1. Free callTell us about your book idea.
  2. Pick your bookChoose the type, the length, and any extras.
  3. Pay your depositThen we get started.
  4. Share your storyWe talk, and you send notes, an outline, photos, or recordings. Whatever works for you.
  5. We writeYour book gets drafted and polished.
  6. Fact checkWe check every name, date, and number so nothing gets mixed up.
  7. Final reviewYour book is checked against Jeff's standards before you see it.
  8. Pay the restOnce your whole book is written, the second half is due.
  9. Your review, then it's yoursYou read it, ask for changes, and get your finished book.

How long does it take?

Most books are finished in 4 to 8 weeks, depending on length. Fully Human-Written usually takes an extra one to two months.

What you get

  • PDFFor printed books. Use it to make your paperback and hardcover.
  • KPFFor Kindle. Use it to publish your ebook on Amazon.
  • WordYour master copy (.docx). Easy to open, read, and make small changes to anytime.

We don't provide other file formats.

Yes, we use AI. We'll never pretend we don't.

A lot of writers use AI tools and don't tell you. We think you deserve to know how your book is made, so we put it in writing before we start.

But we don't just type in a request and hit go. Over years of writing and publishing, we built our own step-by-step system of prompts, templates, and quality checks that shape, review, and improve every draft.

No two books are made exactly the same way. Each one gets the mix of human writing and AI tools that brings out its best. The details are our secret recipe, but the ingredients never are.

Every book is reviewed and approved by real people before it reaches you. Want your final book rewritten entirely by hand, in human words or expression? We can do that too. It takes much more time and work, so it costs more.

Funny thing. The Lying Lawyer might be the most honest writer you ever hire.

Prices

Two simple steps: pick your book, then add any extras you want.

Step 1: What does your book cost?

These prices are for our standard hybrid process, human creativity plus AI-assisted tools.

Book typePrice per wordExampleExample price
Fiction12¢10,000-word novelette$1,200Novels and short stories: horror, thriller, mystery, romance
Fantasy and sci-fi15¢25,000-word novella$3,750
Family and life stories25¢30,000-word family story$7,500
Other nonfiction25¢35,000-word book$8,750History, true crime, how-to, travel, faith
Self-help and inspiration30¢40,000-word book$12,000
Business and professional30¢50,000-word book$15,000
Picture and specialty booksCustom quotePriced by projectCustom quoteChildren's books, coloring books, poetry

How long is that?

  • ShortAbout 20,000 words, or about 80 pages
  • MediumAbout 30,000 words, or about 120 pages
  • Full-sizeAbout 50,000 words, or about 200 pages

Page counts are for a standard 6 x 9 paperback. Actual pages vary with book size and font.

Fiction lengths

  • Short story1,000 to 7,500 words
  • Novelette7,500 to 17,500 words
  • Novella17,500 to 40,000 words
  • Novel40,000 words and up

Shorter fiction is a real, finished form, not a cut-down novel.

Every book comes in a little longer than promised, never shorter. Nonfiction books go up to 50,000 words, and novels go up to 80,000 words. Longer, bigger, or unusual projects get a custom quote. Just ask.

Step 2: Want extras? (optional)

Refer a friend

When your friend's book is paid for, you get $250, and your friend gets $250 off their first book.

Our promise

Every book must pass our final quality review before it reaches you. Jeff sets the standards and signs off on the process, and if any part falls short, it gets revised until it doesn't.

Every book also gets a full continuity and fact check. Names, dates, ages, and numbers all have to match from start to finish. And every book is written by our team, a trusted network of writers, editors, and specialists.

Changes to your book

  • Two rounds of changes are included with every book.
  • What's a round? You read the full draft and send us one list of everything you want changed. We make those changes. That's one round.
  • Need more? Extra rounds are 10% of your book's price each. For a $7,500 book, that's $750 per extra round.
  • Big changes are a new project. If you want to change the whole idea, like turning a memoir into a novel, we'll give you a new quote.

Our own final review never counts against your rounds.

About Jeff

I'm Jeff Rutledge. I've been a Texas lawyer for more than 25 years, and I've written and published books of my own, from horror to humor, poker strategy to children's books. I know what it takes to get a book from an idea to a finished copy in your hands, because I've done it many times.

About 16 years ago, I developed POTS, a condition that makes standing up harder than it should be. It nearly took me out. It's much better now, but it still flares sometimes, and like a lot of people with POTS, I do my best work lying down. So that's where I write.

Hence the name.

Who we can't help

We don't write books for traditional publishing. If you plan to send your book to a literary agent or a big publishing company, we're not the right fit, and we can't take your project.

We also can't write anything you'll turn in for school, a degree, or a certification as your own work.

Our books are made for self-publishing on Amazon and similar sites, for business and professional use, and for family and personal keepsakes.

Let's talk about your book

Ready to start, or just have a question? Send a few quick details, and Jeff will get back to you within 24 hours.

Terms of Service

Effective September 29, 2026

The Lying Lawyer Ghostwriting Agency is a project of Esquire Bookkeeping Services LLC. These terms explain how working with us ("we," "us," "our") works. By hiring us or using this website, you agree to them.

1. What we do

We write, edit, and design books. We are a writing business. We do not provide legal services or legal advice, and working with us does not create an attorney-client relationship, even though our founder is a licensed attorney.

2. Your project and price

Your book type, length, extras, price, and schedule are set out in a written agreement or invoice before we start. Prices on this website are for our standard process and may change, but the price in your signed agreement is the price you pay.

3. Payment

A deposit of 50% is due before work begins. The remaining 50% is due when your complete first draft is finished, before you read it and before revisions begin. We don't share the draft or deliver final files until your balance is paid in full.

4. Cancellations and refunds

Your 50% deposit reserves your spot and starts work on your book right away, so it isn't refundable.

If you cancel, what you owe depends on how far along your book is:

For example, on a $10,000 book: canceling in the first half costs $5,000, canceling in the second half costs $7,500, and once the draft is written, the full $10,000 is due. These amounts cover time and work already spent on your book.

If you cancel or don't pay in full, all work on your book stays with us and is not delivered.

5. How your book is made

Unless you choose Fully Human-Written or Written by Jeff, your book is created with our proprietary hybrid process involving human creativity and AI-assisted tools. Covers are created using AI tools. We tell you this in writing before we start so you can choose the option that's right for you.

6. Copyright

Copyright law for works made with AI tools is still developing and is decided case by case. We do not promise that any book, or any part of a book, will qualify for copyright registration or protection. Copyright in the human-authored parts of a book exists automatically once it's written; registering it with the U.S. Copyright Office is a separate, optional step.

If you want to register your book's copyright, choose Fully Human-Written or Written by Jeff. For Hybrid books, the Copyright Office asks applicants to identify AI-generated material, and our process breakdown is proprietary, so we don't provide it. A Hybrid client who applies anyway does so at their own risk.

This is general information for educational purposes only, offered so you can clearly understand where you stand. It is not legal advice, and nothing on this website, in our agreement, or in our work together creates an attorney-client relationship.

7. Trademark-Ready Title

This option includes a short companion book that turns your title into a series. It does not include filing a trademark, which is a legal service. We do not promise that any title will be approved for a trademark.

8. Who owns the book

Once you have paid in full, all rights we are able to give in your finished book transfer to you, including work done by any member of our team. Until you have paid in full, all rights in the work stay with us. We may keep copies for our records. We will not show your book in our portfolio or name you as a client without your written permission.

9. Your material

You promise that the stories, photos, and other material you give us are yours to share, and that you have any permission needed to include other real people in your book. You are responsible for the facts and claims in your book. We check names, dates, and numbers for consistency, but we can't verify the truth of what you tell us.

10. Changes to your book

Two rounds of changes are included. A round is one list of changes after you read the full draft. Extra rounds are 10% of your book's price each. Changing the whole idea of the book is a new project with a new quote.

11. Amazon publishing

If you choose Amazon publishing, we set up your book in your own Amazon account. We use your login only for that purpose, and we ask you to change your password when we're done. Amazon's decisions about your book, including approval, pricing rules, and payments, are out of our control.

12. Books we can't take

We don't write books intended for traditional publishing or literary agents, or anything you'll submit for school, a degree, or a certification as your own work. We may turn down any project for any reason.

13. Refer a friend

When someone you refer pays for their book in full, you receive $250 and they receive $250 off their first book. One reward per new client. We may change or end this program at any time, but we'll honor referrals made before a change.

14. Confidentiality

We keep your story and personal information private. Everyone on our team who works on your book agrees to keep it confidential.

15. Limits of our responsibility

We work hard to deliver a great book, but we can't promise sales, reviews, or any particular result. To the fullest extent the law allows, our total responsibility for any claim related to your project is limited to the amount you paid us for that project.

16. Texas law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The version in your signed agreement applies to your project.
